In spring 2014, the legendary Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo received a request for a donation of football boots and a T-shirt to help raise $83,000 for a 10-month-old in need of a surgery. Ronaldo not only donated the items but also paid for the surgery of the baby. A young girl, Bridgette Sheridan, fell from the gangplank of the Peking merchant ship at South Street Seaport into the East River. Her father, David Anderson, and an unknown man plunged into the water after her, and all were subsequently pulled back to the pier. Father and daughter were transported to Bellevue Hospital for observation. Schoolboy from Tatarstan Bulat Zagriev died defending his mother, Elvira, from an attacker with a knife. While the world has focused on JK Rowling’s books (450 million sold so far), she has donated millions of pounds to establish a charity for children Lumos, quietly going about liberating thousands of children from prison-like, so-called “orphanages” and returning them to families. The inspiration for her charity is directly traceable to her main hero Harry Potter, a child deprived of parents, love and hope, who fights to survive bullying and isolation. She explains: “‘I have given a large amount to different causes and sometimes that has made me feel better. But the suffering of children so affected me that I wanted to set up my own charity.” In this picture, there are some children at the Russian orphanage meeting the Head of Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill. Today, only teenagers have been left, as babies have already been taken to the families. We pay a tribute to all adoptive parents, the Heroes of Our Times, often unknown, but continually doing their daily deed, giving the most precious gift to orphans – a Family! Anonymous Japanese men saved a dog, who had been for 3 weeks in the ocean on the empty boat. Multiple World Champion in kickboxing Nenad Pagonis auctioned his World Championship belt won in Milan in 2010 to assist in raising money for the treatment of 9-year-old Nadia Novakovic in a heavy physical condition. In June 2008, two-year-old Aradhana Pradhan fell 20 meters (60 ft) into the Nepali Seti River’s gorge. Rescue workers tried to bring the toddler to safety, but the crevice was just too narrow to fit any of them. After 22 hours, the little girl had stopped crying and most feared that she’d died. One rescuer, Salum Nepali, could get 8 meters (25 ft) into the crevice, but no farther. He left the scene, and when he returned, his 12-year-old brother Kamal accompanied him. Kamal volunteered to try to enter the crevice that had defeated the adults, and though the rescuers needed some convincing, they eventually accepted his offer and lowered him in. Unable to see how Kamal was progressing, they relied on a walkie-talkie to help guide him as he descended into the darkness. After a nerve-racking 30 minutes, Kamal appeared at the surface. Aradhana was nestled in a bag that he’d slung across his back. The little girl went to a nearby hospital, where she made a full recovery. Kamal was hailed as a hero and later received multiple titles and awards for his bravery. On January 29, 2017, Archimandrite Job (Stratilat) of Pochayiv Lavra monastery in Ukraine, tragically died while fighting a fire in the house of mercy for the elderly. Young man Kwamivi Mawulolo Dogbo from Africa brings donated learning materials and educates children in Tonouvé, Togo. It is a village without clean water, where hundreds of children have lost one or both parents, so the role Kwamivi has taken on is vital for the future of these children. 77-year-old Asgat Galimzyanov, the first Tatar eccentric capitalist, has gifted 80 buses to orphanages and donated millions to the needy during his lifetime. The benefactor himself lives in a hut and confesses his vocation – to make the world better, and people – happier. A monument in his honour has been erected in the centre of Kazan, near the Kremlin. Narayanan Krishnan is an award-winning chef with Taj Hotels, Bangalore, and was short-listed for an elite job in Switzerland. After witnessing a distressing incident in 2002, he quit his job and began feeding the homeless and mentally disabled in his hometown. He said, “I saw a very old man, literally eating his own human waste out of hunger. I went to the nearby hotel and asked them what was available. They had idli, which I bought and gave to the old man. Believe me, I had never seen a person eating so fast, ever. As he ate the food, his eyes were filled with tears. Those were the tears of happiness.”
